Meeting Minutes: March 18, 2010

We had a great meeting last Thursday with Professor Mike Foley. He
critiqued members’ cover letters and resumes, so they are in
tip-top shape for the Job and Internship Fair. He also shared some
tips and interesting stories. For those who couldn’t make it, I’ve
attached our president Victoria’s cover letter and resume for you
to draw some inspiration.

We also had sign-ups for our next Magazine Sale the week of March
29. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer. Here’s the
open time slots we still have available:
Tuesday
11:30-12:30 – need 1 person
12:30-1:30 – need 2 people
Wednesday
11:30-12:30 – need 2 people
Thursday
11:30-12:30 – need 1 person
Please sign up if you can!

Our next meeting is scheduled for April 1 at 7pm in Weimer 1074.
The tenative subject is a Grad School Debate, where we’ll bring in
some experts to share their thoughts on whether or not grad school
is a good idea.

Finally, we have a few officer positions opening up this semester,
so if you are interested please e-mail Victoria at vmp1989@ufl.edu
and she will provide you more details.

Meeting Minutes: January 21, 2010

Minutes for the Jan. 21, 2010

- Magazine Sale. We’re trying to set up a magazine sale the week
of our next meeting, Feb. 1-4, and we’re looking for people to
table. We will send out more information once the dates and times
are confirmed. However, if you’re interested in tabling, please
e-mail Victoria Phillips at vmp1989@ufl.edu. If you can’t make it
out to table, we ask if you could please donate any old magazines.
They can be dropped off at the Communications Coaching Center in
Weimer Hall Monday through Thursday between 10:40am and 3:50pm.

-Journalism Mentoring Program. We’d like to set up an informal
mentoring program among memebers of FMSA. Basically, we’ll pair
upperclassman with lowerclassman to help them naviagate the
college and provide any advice. If you’re intersted in joining
this program, e-mail Victora (vmp1989@ufl.edu) with your contact
info and your year.

-Newsletter. Another suggestion brought up in the meeting was to
continue the newsletter. So if you’re interested in writing,
photography, design, etc.also e-mail Victoria with contact info
and what you’re interested in doing.

-Suggestions? Other suggestions made in the meeting included more
information about local internships and panels of local editors
and/or people who have had several internships. If you have any
suggestions, please feel to e-mail Victoria or me.

Meeting Minutes: October 1, 2009

Ronald DuPont, executive editor of the North Florida Herald, and
Maghan McDowell, executive editor of INsite Magazine, discussed
and answered questions about the interviewing process.

Here’s some tips they provided:
-Come prepared with resume, clips and cover letter to leave with
employer
-Dress appropriately
-Be informed about the publication (and not just the lastest
issue!)
-Showcase your personality
-Suggest story ideas
-Follow up! (by e-mail, phone call or thank you note)

The meeting was to help you prepare for the upcoming Job and
Internship Fair on Oct. 22. I hope all of you were able to sign up
and good luck!
