-          Resume and Cover Letter Workshop

  • Resume
    • Make it one page
    • Put ‘Media Experiences’ before ‘Education’
    • Add some color to it
      • JCA is offering a workshop – Creating Your Resume on InDesign on Wed., Feb. 23, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (Architecture Bldg. Room 116)
    • Elaborate on what you have done.
      • For example, don’t just write:
        • The Alligator                           Aug. 2010 – Present
        • Explain what you’ve done at The Alligator
  • Cover Letters
    • It doesn’t have to be boring it serious.
    • Try to focus on at least two things in your cover letter. Don’t just write about your experience at The Gainesville Sun. Employers want to see variety, but don’t include an overwhelming amount.

Meeting Minutes: February 3, 2011

-          Guest speakers: Mindy McAdams, UF professor, and Nicole Irving, Giggle publisher

  • Here are some tips from McAdams and Irving!
  • Blogs
    • Start a blog if you haven’t done so! Your blogs should have a focus/theme. McAdams mentioned that your blogs can be random, but only if you are “a fun and exceptional” person.
    • Plus, an interviewer would rather read your blogs than your Alligator clips, which are usually edited by other people.
  • Headlines
    • It’s always good to have key words in your headlines. If your story is about pancakes, make sure to include pancakes (or something of that nature) in your headline to optimize the article’s search.
  • Photos
    • Don’t steal other people’s photos from websites and then use them in your blog posts. You need to ask permission from either the photographer or the current owner of the photo (maybe the company). If you want photos without stirring the pot, go to www.istockphoto.com.
